havani Selvakumaran has lived in Bathurst, NSW, for 15 years but 2009 was a year that tested her resolve as a student, worker and mother.
“In that year I faced the multiple pressures of full-time work, part-time study, a daughter in Year 12 and a family member stricken by illness,” she explains.
“Something had to give and so I dropped my studies, not expecting to be able to resume them when things settled down.”
Fortunately, things began to look up for Bhavani, as we were quick to reassure her by granting an extension of the time allowed to complete her course.
Bhavani was awarded a Certificate III in Children’s Services in January this year, qualifying her to continue working in her chosen field – as a preschool educator at the Bathurst Family Day Care Centre where she has worked for 14 years.
“I love what I do and study has helped me gain the knowledge and skills to do it better but having studied previously in a classroom environment, I appreciate the flexibility of distance learning and the mentoring offered by the training staff,” she explains.
Bhavani is now considering a Diploma of Children’s Services with Cengage Education, and she has the support of her entire family if she chooses to continue in her commitment to lifelong learning.
